Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
